In the second part of our Advocacy show, we are looking at the protest outside Puppy Parlor in Lisle, Illinois.
We will be speaking to the lady who started the protests (CAPS Chicago Campaign Coordinator Ida McCarthy), which take place every Saturday from 12pm-2pm.
How did she find out about this place which ranks number two on the HSUS top 100? What made her want to get out there and raise awareness?
Even though the neighbours are against it, why haven't they done anything about it? How can they stand the smell of decaying flesh come from the back of the store?
Listeners are welcome to call our show and ask questions of their own, or tell us about puppy mills they are aware of, or of anything they are doing to help shut down puppy mills.

“The only thing that’s going to stop this is to ban the sale of puppies at pet stores,” said Ida McCarthy, Chicago Coordinator of the Companion Animal Protection Society. As many as 30 cities in the U.S. have done just that including Los Angeles. San Diego is the latest considering a ban. In Canada, Toronto has enacted a similar law.
“You have to stop the demand and the puppy mills – where are they going to sell their dogs? There are always going to be puppy mills but there’s not going to be thousands of them like there are now,” she said.

Wow! Puppy Parlor in Lisle made the "Horrible Hundred" list! The HSUS has named the top 100 puppy mills throughout the United States with numerous violations against The Animal Welfare Act. They picked out the top two in Illinois, and one is a pet store, guess which one? The award goes to....PUPPY PARLOR in Lisle. Shame on you Lisle City Council for supporting this.

Gammy, my maternal grandmother, used to opine that the only canines worth bothering with are the big, hairy, slobbery sort.
“It’s not really a dog, you know,” she’d declare in her trademark stage whisper, tongue firmly in cheek, as she sized up a chihuahua, Shih Tzu or yorkie.

Former puppy mill dog, Bea, has made many friends and fans these days. Starring next to the beautiful model, Kiley Wirtz, she has posed in a special video and print message to raise awareness about puppy mills and the pet shops that profit from them.
Companion Animal Protection Society protests pet shop in Lisle, Illinois for selling puppy mill dogs.
LISLE, IL, February 2, 2013 – Local pet shop Puppy Parlor advertises on their website huge store-wide sales but they exclude puppies. They find other ways to entice buyers with already low prices on dogs. The problem: selling pets from puppy mills might be a cost cutting move, but it comes with a high collateral price.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support to stop puppy mills! There are dogs locked up in cages in the back room of this place. And here are the statistics from the Illinois Department Of Agriculture:
2-17-2012 55 adult dogs - 40 puppies
4-20-2012 60 adult dogs - 50 puppies
7-6-2012 60 adult dogs - 45 puppies
How many dogs can we cram in those cages? This store is probably around 400 square feet. The back room? Who knows....nobody cango back there and see the dogs stacked in the cages. In my opinion, this is inhumane. If anyone has bought a sick or dying dog from puppy parlor, please go to www.caps-web.org and fill out a pet store complaint form. Thank you!

When Greg Gordon, owner of Dog Patch Pet and Feed in Naperville, transitioned from acquiring dogs from small, private breeders to offering only rescue dogs, he worried the public might think his previous acquisitions were shady and that they’d dislike the change.
Neither was true.
