In any major crime case, such as the Ariel Castro case, the human victims are naturally the focus. But what about animals, the other sentient beings, caught up in a front-page nightmare?

Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man charged with kidnapping, raping and torturing three missing women for ten years, owned dogs. "At least four dogs were impounded in connection to the Castro arrest," said a police source close to the investigation who did not want his name used. He said the dogs were brought to the city kennel.

Ag-Gag bill hearing

Message from CAPS West Coast Director Carole Raphaelle Davis:

Ag-Gag bill hearing TODAY. Please write to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to oppose AB 343!
Here is my letter:
Dear Assembly Member Eggman,

I am writing to you on behalf of our national membership to express our opposition to AB 343. The Companion Animal Protection Society is the only national, non-profit organization that exclusively investigates puppy mills, pet factories and pet dealers (both Internet pet sellers and pet stores). We work with law enforcement and government agencies on a daily basis and on a national scale in order to eradicate pet factory cruelty. In California, our undercover investigations are the foundation and basis for the pet sales ban ordinances in West Hollywood, Glendale and Los Angeles.

Happy Easter? Not for rabbits

"I want this Easter to be over already!” says Lejla Hadzimuratovic, president of the Bunny World Foundation, a rabbit rescue organization based in Los Angeles. “This celebration is actually a bloodbath—an atrocity that leads to massive death of rabbits.”

The first time I saw Lamby, I winced -- my chest felt like it was caving in on me like it does during one of my anxiety attacks. Lamby was one of the saddest cases I had ever seen. His picture was in one of the daily email pleas I get to rescue homeless dogs from the shelter. This young Bichon Frisé had been suffering in the Los Angeles shelter for a week with no skin on his lower hind legs. The picture was graphic: His feet were badly broken, crushed to pulp, bones exposed. Not only were his hind legs completely de-gloved, but the tendons were torn and what was left of the flesh was putrid and green. He was going to need expensive medical care, possibly a double amputation.

Michael Vick has bought a dog. Hint: It’s not a poodle!

Now that the ban prohibiting him from owning a dog has expired, Mike Vick has bought a new dog. Steering far from the breed he is associated with torturing, the American Staffordshire Terrier, Vick has acquired a dog to suit his inflated image of his reformed self: a Belgian Malinois (similar to a German Shepherd). This is a highly bred type of dog that has a more elegant appearance than the Staffordshire Terrier, a dog with more refined lines but just as powerful and faster than the Staffordshire Terrier, and with a more complex intelligence—than Vick.

Are you missing a dog in your life? Would you love to have a dog but are reluctant to take on the full responsibility? Maybe you live in a small apartment or are worried about the burden of unexpected veterinary bills. Or perhaps you recently lost your dog and aren’t ready for another full-time dog. Well, there is a way to enjoy doggie companionship and help a dog in need on a temporary basis: it’s called fostering. Fostering a dog is one of the most rewarding ways to get that sublime dog love without having the full responsibility of lifelong guardianship.

Humane Society award for Ke$ha is for the birds

Publication/Event date: 2013-02-28
Publication name: Examiner.com

Is Ke$ha’s love for animals real or faux? That is the question being asked by members of theanimal rights community. On March 23, The Humane Society of the United States will honor pop star Ke$ha at their annual benefit gala, the Genesis Awards. She will be receiving the prestigious Wyler award for her “activism.” Some animal rights advocates are calling fowl, claiming Ke$ha doesn’t deserve an award. Ke$ha’s signature style is that of a drunk, hillbilly huntress—knife in mouth, feather earrings and accessories, feather headdresses, feather jackets, leather, snake skin, bones, teeth and skulls as accessories and lots real-looking fur.
