Dogs & Humans Shedding Pounds Together

January 16th, 2010 by dhoward

When we bring a dog into our lives, we add a new family member to the household. As we provide food, shelter, and love to our four-legged friends, they reward us in many other ways beside the daily face-licks and warm-welcomes after a long day at work. According to WebMD, pets help lower blood pressure, lessen anxiety, and boost our immunities. But what about weight loss? Read the rest of this entry »

The HAPPY Act

January 7th, 2010 by dhoward

We search high and low to buy their quality foods, pay excessive yet necessary medical bills, and once we lay them to rest in peace, we mourn them. Our four legged friends play such an important role in our daily lives that besides being pets, they become part of our families. As perceptions evolve, our companions aren’t just animals, but individuals who transcend the stereotypical human and domesticated animal relationship. Thankfully, CAPS members aren’t the only ones who have experienced the life-changing epiphany. Apparently, law makers nationwide are feeling the heart-string tugs.

Basset Hounds Looking for Homes

January 6th, 2010 by dhoward

You all know Beatrice, the sad-eyed beauty who was once rescued from a puppy mill by CAPS investigators and became a poster puppy for CAPS and the fight against the pet shop and puppy mill industry.  The congenial dog who wags her tail like a helicopter propeller won the hearts of many CAPS members and now, in her years of glory, has her own blog, Bea’s Beat , which she’s barking for you to visit ASAP.

Bea doesn’t want you to gawk at her stardom, though. This one of a kind lady is asking folks like you for help. There are other Basset Hounds searching for a forever home, promising great companions in return for a little love. They come from a place in NY state that is a haven for damsels like herself. Holiday Treats

December 24th, 2009 by dhoward

CAPS can’t get enough of the recipes posted in It’s A Vegan Dog’s Life. Truth be told, ’tis the season for delicious food and heart-warming baking. Since the previous post was all about pet holiday hazards (make sure you read it!), we have a solution for when your pup makes a threat with those big, sad eyes (you know the look, don’t you?). Don’t give in by letting Fido lick the batter bowl (or “accidentally” throwing some scraps under the table - BIG NO NO), but make a healthy treat instead!  This way, after a long day full of preparations and celebrations, everyone goes to bed with a happy, full tummy and a calm, guilt-free mind.

Vick Seeks Redemption, HSUS Grants It

November 22nd, 2009 by dhoward

How would YOU react if a rapist posed with a victim on the Rape Victim Advocacy Program’s website? Would an organization such as RVAP, a sexual assault crisis center based in Iowa City, IA, fathom such a stunt? Regardless of whether they include a sincere apology and a tangible display of remorse from the criminal, would the public be comfortable? The answer would probably be no. However, when it comes to animal cruelty the same rules don’t apply.

Let’s take Michael Vick’s case as an example. Read the rest of this entry »

Pet Burials: Intriguing Facts

November 18th, 2009 by dhoward

Burying our cherished pets is not a recent practice. Although many claim society buries animals for hygienic reasons, we all know there’s more to the story. Whether your  favorite goldfish’s remains are comfortably snuggled in a shoe box or an engraved stone lies on top of your rabbit’s final, resting place, there are emotional & personal reasons for burying our barking, meowing, and chirping loved ones. Think of it as a symbolism of enduring and memorable love, not toxic biohazard. If you research the facts, you’ll realize animal-human bonds go beyond life, death, and history. The Doggie Baking Begins

November 5th, 2009 by dhoward

The winter coats are hanging, the leaves are turning, and the oven is begging for some Autumn love. While sweet-toothed, amateur bakers scroll their cookbooks for the perfect apple pie, pumpkin pie, and apple crisp recipes, we’re on a mission to get your bouncing pooches what they’ve been begging for all along: a taste of that scrumptious November treat.

Doggie Halloween Bash

October 31st, 2009 by dhoward

On Wednesday  October 28, Boston’s Pawsh Dog Boutique held a Halloween Bash to die for. It was no surprise when characters like Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Batdog, Princess Thatcher, and Bea the Chef strutted in wagging their tails. According to the boutique’s website , the yapping party raised more than $300 for the Animal Rescue League of Boston . The best part, according to our four-legged secret source, was the costume contest. The judges had some tough choices to make amongst all the adorable contestants, but the votes were cast and the winners were fairly chosen. Read the rest of this entry »

Halloween Safety Tips from CAPS

October 31st, 2009 by veronica

We all love Halloween: silly costumes, loud parties, yummy candy, creepy jack-o’-lanterns, and spooky stories included (seriously, what’s not to love?!). Just because we humans enjoy the thrills and chills that come with the Autumn season doesn’t mean Fido feels the same way. The 31st can be downright stressful for our four-legged companions. To make sure everyone enjoys the spooky festivities, read the following precautions offered by yours truly:
