Peaceful Anti-Puppy Mill Protest of Citipups
Who: Companion Animal Protection Society
What: Peaceful Anti-Puppy Mill Protest of Citipups
Where: Citipups – 147 8th Avenue, New York, New York 10011
When: Wednesday, March 27, 2013; from 6:00 PM EST to 8:00 PM EST
Why: Citipups purchases dogs from known puppy mills in the Midwest. These inhumane breeders have hundreds of dogs crammed into small cages. In some cases, dogs come from trash-filled facilities that fail to pass minimum USDA requirements for sanitation. There are reported cases of dogs with preventable diseases like kennel cough, parasites, Giardia, Coccidia, Bilateral Cryptorchidism, ulcers, Demodectic Mange, and multiple infections. Lack of adequate veterinary care is rampant in most of the Citipups suppliers. Selling dogs from these mass breeders exposes consumers to sickly dogs that can cause significant financial and emotional strain. The practice is tantamount to consumer fraud.
How: CAPS President Deborah Howard will attend the protest on Wednesday at the Chelsea location of Citipups after appearing in several national and local media outlets. All week long, she will be promoting CAPS' new national advertising campaign, Models Against Pet Shops and Puppy Mills, and working with local CAPS volunteers on the protest. During the protest, CAPS will hand out fliers and brochures to potential pet buyers. Part of our protest will include signs and talks about the cruelty of puppy mills and the pet shops that support them.

The last couple of months have been purely magical. Ever since February 2013, CAPS’ “Models Against Pet Shops and Puppy Mills” campaign has been all over the USA. Our PSA “This Is the Face of a Puppy Mill Dog,” starring me and fabulous model Kiley Wirtz-Jennings, has aired on PBS stations in Tampa Bay, Los Angeles and Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, and Chicago. Being the star in a PSA isn’t enough for a girl like me, though! Ever since I was a pup, I’ve had big goals and the last couple of months I’ve seen some of those dreams come true. This is all so exciting!
