Treating Farm Animals With Respect

Publication/Event date: 2013-07-27
Publication name: The New York Times

Summary:
My Sunday column is a side trip from the issues I mostly write about, and has nothing to do with international relations or politics. Rather, it’s about our ethical obligations to animals.

Comment by CAPS President Deborah Howard:

"I have long admired your column for addressing human rights issues, especially those of women in third world countries. Please also address the suffering of those animals kept in horrific conditions in thousand of puppy mills in the Midwest, PA and NY (the latter two have mostly Amish mills) in order to produce puppies for pet shop and Internet puppy sales.

The Companion Animal Protection Society, the nonprofit I started more than 20 years ago, has investigated more than 1,000 puppy (and cat) mills, most of them USDA-licensed. Our undercover employment investigation brought down one of the largest and most notorious dog brokers in the country (she had 900 adults dogs and 400 puppies). We were also behind the OIG's scathing report on the USDA's failure to enforce the Animal Welfare Act as it pertains to this industry.

While millions of dog, cats and other companion animals suffer and die in often substandard shelters around the country, uninformed consumers continue to buy, often on impulse, puppies and kittens from pet shops and online. There are 111 pet shops in NYC, Westchester and on Long Island. Meanwhile, the conditions at Animal Care and Control centers in NYC are horrible. Young kittens, often as young as a month or less, are routinely euthanized.

You and your readers can watch our undercover footage, read our investigation reports and learn more about our outreach and ordinance work on our website."

One of the two dogs rescued from the Lancaster, California shelter on July 14th couldn’t even wag his tail when he was rescued. “His fur was so severely matted, his tail was stuck to one side. He couldn’t even move it,” said Toby Wisneski, founder of Leave No Paws Behind, a dog rescue organization based in Los Angeles.

Summary:
In any major crime case, such as the Ariel Castro case, the human victims are naturally the focus. But what about animals, the other sentient beings, caught up in a front-page nightmare?

Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man charged with kidnapping, raping and torturing three missing women for ten years, owned dogs. "At least four dogs were impounded in connection to the Castro arrest," said a police source close to the investigation who did not want his name used. He said the dogs were brought to the city kennel.

Summary:
“The only thing that’s going to stop this is to ban the sale of puppies at pet stores,” said Ida McCarthy, Chicago Coordinator of the Companion Animal Protection Society. As many as 30 cities in the U.S. have done just that including Los Angeles. San Diego is the latest considering a ban. In Canada, Toronto has enacted a similar law.

“You have to stop the demand and the puppy mills – where are they going to sell their dogs? There are always going to be puppy mills but there’s not going to be thousands of them like there are now,” she said.

Summary:
Michael Vick has bought a dog. Hint: It’s not a poodle!

Now that the ban prohibiting him from owning a dog has expired, Mike Vick has bought a new dog. Steering far from the breed he is associated with torturing, the American Staffordshire Terrier, Vick has acquired a dog to suit his inflated image of his reformed self: a Belgian Malinois (similar to a German Shepherd). This is a highly bred type of dog that has a more elegant appearance than the Staffordshire Terrier, a dog with more refined lines but just as powerful and faster than the Staffordshire Terrier, and with a more complex intelligence—than Vick.
