Summary:
I feel like we have been through a war together.
I have to say, I do not recognize France. Rodilhan looked like a town under siege during a war. I remember women, my mother’s age, running towards us, away from the barricades, screaming, attempting to breathe after being gassed at point blank range. Others rushed passed us towards the barricades, bravely towards the real criminals, the police–the state.

Summary:
American Tourists who are visiting the village of Rodilhan on October 27 will see a side of France that the French government would rather not have them see. There, they can view the dirty little secret that passes as culture. That secret is bullfighting. Those who think bullfighting is illegal in France will be almost right. However, there is an exception. French anti bullfighting laws are lifted because slaughtering bulls in the bull ring is considered part of the area’s culture.

NEW YORK — The Americans are coming. For the first time ever, American animal protection organizations are heading to France to stop a massacre of bulls on October 27.

Friends of Animals (FoA) and Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) will join forces with over 1,000 animal rights activists at a bullfighting arena in Rodilhan, a small village in the south of France. A US delegation is flying to France to support Comité Radicalement Anticorrida (CRAC Europe), the French anti-bullfighting organization.

Summary:
The French tourism industry doesn't really want you to know about it. You won't find it anywhere on the official French government tourist office website. France is a civilized country, known as the culture capital of the world, right? But did you know that the act of torturing an animal to death was successfully elevated in status to "culture" and "art" by French lawmakers? Yes, it's true--the French government, a handful of celebrities including tax fugitive Gérard Depardieu and thousands of deluded sadists using "tradition" as an excuse, are complicit in some of the most horrific animal abuse in the world--bullfighting.

Treating Farm Animals With Respect

My Sunday column is a side trip from the issues I mostly write about, and has nothing to do with international relations or politics. Rather, it’s about our ethical obligations to animals.

Comment by CAPS President Deborah Howard:

"I have long admired your column for addressing human rights issues, especially those of women in third world countries. Please also address the suffering of those animals kept in horrific conditions in thousand of puppy mills in the Midwest, PA and NY (the latter two have mostly Amish mills) in order to produce puppies for pet shop and Internet puppy sales.

The Companion Animal Protection Society, the nonprofit I started more than 20 years ago, has investigated more than 1,000 puppy (and cat) mills, most of them USDA-licensed. Our undercover employment investigation brought down one of the largest and most notorious dog brokers in the country (she had 900 adults dogs and 400 puppies). We were also behind the OIG's scathing report on the USDA's failure to enforce the Animal Welfare Act as it pertains to this industry.

While millions of dog, cats and other companion animals suffer and die in often substandard shelters around the country, uninformed consumers continue to buy, often on impulse, puppies and kittens from pet shops and online. There are 111 pet shops in NYC, Westchester and on Long Island. Meanwhile, the conditions at Animal Care and Control centers in NYC are horrible. Young kittens, often as young as a month or less, are routinely euthanized.

You and your readers can watch our undercover footage, read our investigation reports and learn more about our outreach and ordinance work on our website."
