| Diseases and Illnesses | I recently purchased a great dane from a breeder in California. (I'm in PA) I believed she was a reputable breeder from the research I did but 3 days after receiving the puppy it came down with Parvo. After 10 days of intensive care and a over 00 in vet bills our Duke was released but was so thin from being sick. He was only 8 weeks when we received him. After only being home for 3 days he started to have additional problems so we took him back to the hospital where we were told that he had a host of additional issues one being a congenital megaesphogus that had caused him to get pneumonia. Being as tiny as he was, his body just couldn't fight off the disease and we needed to put him down. We are now trying to determine what our next steps should be. Many of the things my vet asked me of about my breeder turned out to be not the best practices in terms of breeding and I really want to report this to the appropriate authorities on Great Danes.
In particular - Duke has 12 siblings and they could potentially have parvo among other things- she has continued to sell the puppies and is breeding a new litter with her other dogs currently. I fear that she is spreading this horrible virus. After Duke was diagnosed she told me that his father had parvo which I couldn't understand how she then could be breeding in that timeframe when the virus can affect puppies for up to 1 year. His father was only 18 months old and this was his third litter.
She had sent us pictures of the puppies around other outside dogs and in public parks at only 5 weeks old. Other owners have told us that when they went to pick out their puppy they met her in gas stations and public parks and all the puppies were in the back of a pick-up all covered in feces. Since Duke's passing we have learned that 4 others from his litter died and most others are sick either with Parvo or other problems.
I just want this women and her practices to be stopped. She advertises that she has this top of the line breeding system and that is obviously not the case when she is overbreeding sick puppies every month. |
