Our Legacy Society Page
Since our founding, individuals dedicated to our long-term success have set up planned gifts for our benefit. Some donors included us as a beneficiary of their will, retirement plan (401(k), 403(b), IRA, etc.) or life insurance policy while others added to our endowment to continue their annual support after they were gone. Each of these individuals believed in our mission and wanted to be sure we could continue to thrive and grow into the future. For this special group, we created the Beatrice Legacy Society. The Beatrice Legacy Society is open to all individuals who have named us in their long-term plans or created an endowment for our benefit.
The Society is named in honor of CAPS' Spokesdog Beatrice. The Basset Hound puppy mill survivor is the canine star of our national advertising campaign, Models Against Pet Shops and Puppy Mills. CAPS rescued Beatrice when she was four months old from a USDA-licensed puppy mill in South Dakota that bred Basset Hounds for the pet shop industry. Because of her deformed elbows, they said "they couldn't use her for breeding." CAPS also rescued Beatrice's mother, Grace, because the mill stated, "she had produced a dog with deformities," and her grandmother, Millie, because they claimed, "she wasn't having large enough litters."
Unfortunately, Beatrice's troubles didn't end with the rescue. She was born in substandard conditions with little or no veterinary care. Mycoplasma pneumonia caused permanent scarring on her lungs. An orthopedic veterinarian diagnosed her with congenital luxation of the radial heads of both elbows. By the age of four years, she already had glaucoma, which Grace and Millie would later develop. She has undergone two laser surgeries in her right eye but is now blind in both eyes from glaucoma. She needs weekly physical rehabilitation for her deformed elbows. Other conditions include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (enlarged left ventricle of the heart) and most recently, anemia, for which she will be undergoing testing to determine the cause. Although she has endured so much, Beatrice is a calm, gentle, social dog who loves tummy rubs.
By joining the Beatrice Legacy Society, you can ensure the prevention of cruelty of puppy mill dogs like at Beatrice.
