Picture this if you can. You have a basement in your home, and you have filled it with 150 dogs in cages. They live down there. When it’s not too cold out, you run fans to circulate the air, and when it’s warm enough you open the windows for some ventilation. It is January in northeastern Illinois. Welcome to Adrien’s Puppy Paradise in St. Anne, Il.

Do you remember the first time you were incensed about an issue involving animals? Whenever we come upon an issue that touches us in a very personal way, our innate reaction is to want to make a change; we want to speak for the voiceless, defeat those who had a hand in cruelty, and educate others. However, sometimes this sense of urgency leaves us paralyzed and overwhelmed with the behemoth task before us.

New York, N.Y., November 24, 2014 – An important public meeting regarding a proposed local law (Ordinance 55) regulating pet shops will take place on November 24, 2014. Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) Founder and President Deborah Howard will testify in support of the bill. CAPS has played a vital role in providing statistical proof that retail pet stores in New York City sell puppies sourced from puppy mills with USDA violations. When Int. No. 55-A was introduced for the first time, CAPS General Counsel John Maher was among the first to testify in support of the bill. The proposed amendment would significantly improve the New York City Retail Pet Sales Law and related ordinances concerning spay, neuter, and micro chipping requirements. Ordinance 55 will also place tougher restrictions on pet shops in New York City.
